The government has announced they will reintroduce functional skills flexibility for apprentices, meaning apprentices can take their end point assessment prior to their English and maths functional skills test.

From February 25 2021, the flexibilities will be applied to eligible apprentices. The temporary flexbilities are only available to those apprentices who have exhausted all possibilities that allow them to take their functionalskills assessment, whether this is face-to-face or remote and ‘they have confimed their intent to continue and complete their FSQ within three months of starting their EPA.’ Evidence of this must also be included within the learner’s file or evidence portfolio.

The government pointed out the following factors must be met by apprentices looking to take advantage of the functional skills flexibility:

  • Not be on a break in learning (an apprentice may return from a break in learning to take their end-point assessment)
  • Meet all other gateway criteria to progress to their EPA as specified in the apprenticeship standard (except meeting the English and maths requirements)
  • Have been confirmed by you and their employer as ready for both their EPA, and to take a functional skills qualification assessment
  • Start their EPA on or before 31 May 2021
